BERKSHIRE, from bare-oak-shire, is situated in the Southern part of England, and is bounded on the North by the river Thames, which separates it from Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire; on the South by Hampshire; on the East by Surrey ; and on the West by Wiltshire. Its shape is very irregular—extending about 43 miles from East to West, and 30 from North to South: it comprises altogether about 750 square miles. The County is divided into twenty hundreds, and also forms an archdeaconry in the diocese of Oxford: it is further divided into rural deaneries, the four chief being—Reading, Newbury, Abingdon, and Wallingford. There are twelve Poor Law Unions, and some 150 parishes. Three ranges of hills traverse the county—the first enters from Oxfordshire ; the second runs across the county; and the other, the Southern part. Of these, the most important is the second range, containing as it does the well-known ” White Horse Hill,” which rises about 900 feet above the level of the sea, and takes its name from the well-defined figure of a huge white horse cut in its side—supposed to have been done by the Saxons to commemorate one of their great victories over the Danes about the year 871—the horse being the most famous emblem of the Saxons. In the vicinity of this hill are to be found many curious antiquities: the most remarkable are the ” Blowing-stone ” and ” Wayland Smith’s Cave.”
